The AltMedDex® System contains information about herbal therapies and other dietary supplements that are not regulated in the United States by the FDA. Consequently, the depth and breadth of clinical and scientific data usually associated with FDA-approved substances is lacking for these substances. AltMedDex content comprises data extracted from U.S. international primary sources. However, secondary sources are occasionally used to supplement primary source data in instances where information is lacking. Additionally, the manufacture and distribution of herbal substances is not regulated in the United States, and no quality standards currently exist. Lack of standardization and manufacturing standards may result in variability in herbal content and efficacy among manufacturers. Albeit rare, contamination may occur in the manufacturing process and the potential for misidentification of plant species does exist. For all these reasons, healthcare professionals should use their professional knowledge and judgement in applying the information contained in the AltMedDex System to clinical situations. Furthermore, because of the unregulated nature of the industry, healthcare professionals are advised to familiarize themselves with specific manufacturers and products before recommending their use to patients.
